Born in Atlanta and raised in Chicago West gained recognition as producer at Roc-A-Fella Records in the early 2000s, creating singles for several artists, and developing the "chipmunk soul" sampling style. He decided to go on a solo career as a rapper, and released The College Dropout (2004) which was a commercial success. Later that year, he founded GOOD Music. On the albums Late Registration (2005) and Graduation (2006), West explored a wide range of musical elements like synthesizers, orchestras, and autotune. The commercial and critical success of his sixth and fifth albums, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010) and Yeezus (2013) was also apparent. West further diversified his musical styles with The Life of Pablo (2016) and Ye (2018) and also explored Christian and gospel music on Jesus Is King (2019). His tenth studio album Donda (2021) came out to continued commercial success, but with mixed reviews. West's discography also includes two full-length albums he co-produced with Jay-Z Watch the Throne (2011) with Jay-Z and Kids See Ghosts (2018) with Kid Cudi.
