Born in Atlanta and raised in Chicago, West gained recognition as a producer with Roc-A-Fella Records in the early 2000s, producing singles for a variety of artists as well as developing the "chipmunk soul" sampling style. He made the decision to make a career of his own as a rapper and came out with The College Dropout (2004) which was a commercial smash. He founded the record label GOOD Music later that year. The albums Late Registration (2005) and Graduation (2006), West explored a wide range of musical elements, including synthesizers, orchestras, and autotune. The commercial and critical popularity of his fifth and sixth albums, My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy (2010) and Yeezus (2013) was also apparent. West further diversified his musical style on The Life of Pablo (2016) and Ye (2018) and also explored Christian and gospel music on Jesus Is King (2019). The tenth album of his Donda (2021) came out to great commercial success, but mixed reviews. West's discography also includes complete albums Watch the Throne (2011) by Jay-Z and Kids See Ghosts (2018) by Kid Cudi.
