The success of Burnham as an YouTube star in the 2000s brought him recognition for his subversive comedy and humorous stand-up. The comedian later released four comedy albums for Comedy Central Records, released three comedy specials: Words, Words, Words (2010) and What. (2013) and Make Happy (2016). He was also a co-star in the MTV mockumentary Zach Stone is Gonna be Famous (2013) and was published Egghead or You'll Never Stay Alive on Ideas All by Yourself (2013). After performing comedy and writing, he decided to switch careers and directed the critically-acclaimed drama Eighth Grade (2018). He has also directed comedy specials for other comedians and was a part of Promising Young Women (2020), an Oscar-winning comedy thriller.
