Alan Wilson Watts (06 January 1915 - 16 November 1973) was an English writer, speaker, and "philosophical entertainer". 2 Watts is most well-known for his ability to interpret and promote Hindu, Taoist, Buddhist and Chinese traditions for an Western audience. Watts was born in Chislehurst in England and relocated to New York in 1938 to begin Zen training. He graduated with a master's in theology from Seabury-Western Theological Seminary and became an Episcopal priest in the year 1945. He left the priesthood in 1950 and relocated to California and joined the faculty of the American Academy of Asian Studies. Watts gained a following during his time as a programmer volunteer at KPFA. KPFA radio station in Berkeley. He wrote more than 25 books and articles about the subject of philosophy and religion, and introduced the new hippie counterculture in The Way of Zen (1957) One of the first bestselling books on Buddhism. He suggested in Psychotherapy East and West (1961) that Buddhism can be thought of as the basis of psychotherapy. Nature, Man and Woman (1958), was his most favored book. 4. His work on human consciousness and psychedelics include "The New Alchemy", (1958), and "The Joyous Cosmology" (1962), also explore his exploration of consciousness in humans.
