Zatanna is the daughter of the magician Giovanni Zatara, who appeared in Golden Age comics and Sindella. Zatanna is also a part of the mystery species Homo magi. Zachary Zatara, her younger cousin, is also a magician within DCU. Before she discovered her magical abilities, Zatanna made her living as an illusionist on stage. She also was investigating the disappearance of her father. The costume she wears was an inspiration from her father's, however, she has substituted her slacks with heels as well as fishnet stockings. The story of Zatanna's quest for her father was featured in a variety of publications written by Julius Schwartz. In it, Zatanna battles Robin and Hawkman while disguised as a witch, under the supervision and control of the villain, the Outsider. She is paired with the Atom as well as Green Lantern and the Elongated Man. Justice League of America #51 was the final issue of the series in February of 1967. The Justice League adventure was set in the midst of Batman's peak popularity. It was believed that Zatanna the witch from Detective Comics, was trying to convince Batman to join the Justice League of America issue. Zatanna was a member of the team alongside Superman in the DC Comics Presents issue [18and Batman in The Brave and the Bold. A story that spanned 10 pages appeared in DC Special Blue Ribbon Digest #5 November-December. 1980 ) revealed more details about Zatara's past and the way Zatanna began her search to find her father. The power of Zatanna decreases throughout her time in Justice League. She can currently only control the elements of earth, water as well as air, fire and earth. In World's Finest Comics #274-278, Zatanna was a supporting character. The limit on her abilities is lifted in World's Finest Comics #277 (March 1982). She aids Wonder Woman and other super-heroines in battling an alien menace. Zatanna was one time appointed Justice League chairperson by votes. John Constantine arrives to save Zatanna as well as Mento from the villainous entity known as the "Great Evil Beast". The seance is held in Wintersgate Manor in Georgetown, Washington D.C. which is also a time-boundary that is open to other planes. Constantine invited Zatanna to an "tantric study session" and Zatara will not let Zatanna go out of his gaze while Constantine present. He's forced to take part in the ritual that he was not invited. The group is spotted twice by the Beast, who is so tall that the thumb of its own looms over the Hell's surface. Sargon is doomed from the first glance. Zatara convinces him that he should be a sorcerer's death and to not let go of the hold of his hands. Sargon burns to death nobly. The second glance starts to warm up Zatanna. Zatara is hesitantly taking the heat and then dies (his burning cap falls on the table). But the father saves the life of his daughter.
