Her part in Fantastic Voyage (1966) was her first major success. Then she was awarded an offer from 20th Century Fox. They gave the contract to Hammer Film Productions in Britain which produced One Million Years B.C. (1966). While she only had three lines of dialogue, her pictures of her bikini and her doe-skin became bestsellers and created her a worldwide icon of sexuality. She later starred in Bedazzled (1967), Bandolero! (1968), 100 Rifles (1969), Myra Breckinridge (1970) and Hannie Caulder (1971). She made several television variety specials. By portraying powerful female characters that was instrumental in her breaking the mould of the conventional symbol of sex, Welch developed a unique film persona that made her an icon in the 1970s and 1960s. Her rise to fame in the mid-1960s was partly credited with ending Hollywood's vigorous promotion of the blonde bombshell. [2][3][4] In 1974, she won the Golden Globe Award as Best Motion Picture Actress in Comedy or Musical for her performance in The Three Musketeers. For her performance in Right to Die (1987) She received nominations for the Golden Globe Award as Best Actress in a Television Film. Empire magazine named Welch one of the 100 Sexiest Movie Stars in Film History in 1995. Playboy listed Welch as No. 3.
