In her debut film Species (1995), Henstridge was Sil, an artificially engineered hybrid of human and alien created from a message received from SETI and who escapes from the captivity of a lab. Sil is hunted by a team comprised consisting of experts to prevent her from reproducing. She is also able to recognize her instinct to locate a mate. 5 Species was a massive success, earning US$113 million at box office. [6] The film is notable for its sexual content. Henstridge won the MTV Movie Award in Best Kiss for a scene where her character smacks a man's head while she kisses him. She played Eve which was a more obscure genetic model of Sil in Species II. It was an unremarkable box-office hit. Between Species films Henstridge starred with Christopher Lambert in Adrenalin: Fear the Rush and Jean-Claude Van Damme in Maximum Risk in 1996. A few independent films followed with varied box office returns, such as Bela Donna, Dog Park and Maximum Risk. Henstridge was the star of The Whole Nine Yards (2001) and its sequel The Whole Ten Yards (2004). While she was not a fan of science fiction, she joined John Carpenter's Ghosts of Mars (2001), as Lieutenant Melanie Ballard. The film was not well received, earning a 20% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. 7] She appeared briefly in Species as Eve in 2004.
