Naomi Campbell

Campbell's career progressed gradually over the following decades. Campbell walked catwalks of designers such as Gianni Versace, Azzedine Almaia and Isaac Mizrahi. She also photographed for photographers like Bruce Weber, Herb Ritts and Peter Lindbergh. 10. Campbell formed a trio known as the "Trinity" in the late 1980s. They became the most sought-after and well-known models of their time. When confronted with discrimination based on race, Campbell received support from her white circle of friends. She later mentioned Turlington and Evangelista as telling Dolce & Gabbana, "If you don't employ Naomi then you're not getting us. "[16] In December 1987, she was on the cover of British Vogue and was the publication's first black cover girl since 1966. [18] In August 1988 she was the first black model to appear on the front cover of French Vogue after the designer, Yves St. Laurent, threatened to pull his ads in the magazine if they didn't feature Naomi on the cover. In the following year, she appeared on the cover of American Vogue in which was the first time a black model was featured on the cover of the September magazine which is usually the biggest and most important issue In January 1990, Campbell, who was named "the most powerful model of all" by Interview,[20] appeared alongside Turlington, Evangelista, Cindy Crawford and Tatjana Patitz on a cover of British Vogue which was produced by Peter Lindbergh. [21] The group was later cast to star in the music video for George Michael's "Freedom! '90". The year was 1990, Campbell, Turlington and Evangelista were part of a select group of models who were "supermodels" in the fashion industry. In addition, with the addition of newcomer Kate Moss, they were collectively known as the "Big Six".In March of 1991 in the defining moment of the so-called supermodel era, Campbell walked the catwalk for Versace with Turlington, Evangelista and Crawford with arms in-hand and singing the lyrics to "Freedom! '90". Later that year, she starred as Michael Jackson's love interest in the music video for "In the Closet".In April 1992, she posed with several other top models for the hundredth-anniversary cover of American Vogue, shot by Patrick Demarchelier. In Madonna's controversial book Sex, she starred in a number of naked photos with Madonna and Big Daddy Kane.In 1993, Campbell twice appeared on the cover of American Vogue In April, alongside Christy Turlington, Claudia Schiffer, Stephanie Seymour and Helena Christensen, and again alone, in June. Campbell also modelled platform shoes with high heels on the VivienneWestwood 1993 Fall catwalk. They were later on display at London's Victoria and Albert Museum. Although she was successful however, Elite Model Management, who was representing Campbell from 1987 onwards, fired her in September because "no amount of money or prestige could further justify the abuse" to clients and staff.
