Higareda was the daughter of Jose Luis Higareda and actress Miriam Higareda. She was born in Villahermosa Tabasco, Mexico. Acting was her first love, and she also began dancing flamenco, tap folklore, and tap from a young age. At the age of 14, she moved to Mexico City from her native Tabasco to pursue an acting career. Her first appearance was in the theater performing in various plays which included "Little Women" and "Don Juan. Cuaron advised Martha to pursue her acting career. She switched her college major to Communications to pursue acting. In 2002, Higareda had her first lead role in the film Amarte Duele, directed by Fernando Sarinana, in which she co-starred with Luis Fernando Pena and Alfonso Herrera. The film was a huge success , and gave Martha the name "The Mexican Sweetheart". She won The Silver Goddess award for her role as the female leading lady and was awarded the MTV movie's most admired actress award. In 2003 she was offered the lead in a Mexican television show called Enamorate on TV Azteca, next to Yahir, where she also shared credits alongside Maria Ines Guerra, Martha Cristiana, Fernando Sarfati, and Amara Villafuerte. However, her passion was creating films. Higareda returned in the film Siete Dias next to Jaime Camil and Jaime Camil. In the film, she played a girl whose dream is to make U2 appear in the city of Monterrey within a week. The film was co-produced with Carlos Carrera (El crimen del Padre Amaro), in Sexo, amor y otras contraversiones, which was awarded a second Silver Goddess Award. In the same year, she was nominated as the best supporting actress for the Mexican Academy Awards for her role in Fuera del Cielo, In 2007, she starred in her latest film Ninas Mal, directed by Fernando Sarinana where she shared credits with Camila Sodi and Ximena Sarinana. The film was produced by Columbia Pictures was a huge success and Higareda played a punk, stubborn and sweet Adela, her unusual hairstyle and style became a trend among Mexican teenagers. An Agent approached Martha after the movie had been shown at the American Film Market. He introduced Martha to Craig Shapiro who, to the present, represents Higareda in ICM Partners. Shapiro convinced Martha to relocate to LA. In 2008, she relocated to Hollywood to audition for a role and to study scriptwriting. The the same year, she was a part-time actor in David Ayer's film Street Kings, sharing credits with Keanu Reeves, Hugh Laurie, and Forest Whitaker
