Christina Maria Aguilera (/aegI'le@r@/; Spanish: born December 18 20th, 1980) is an American singer, songwriter, actress, and television celebrity. Known for her four-octave vocal range and ability to sustain high notes, she has been referred to as the "Voice of Generation". Aguilera was a household name after her debut album. The singer is often credited with helping to revive teen pop in the late 1990s. Her songs, which are infused with sexuality, feminism as well as domestic violence, have earned both controversy and critical praise, for which she is often mentioned as an influencer by other artists. After appearances on television shows, Aguilera signed with RCA Records in 1998. The album's debut singles included three Billboard Hot 100 number one songs "Genie in a Bottle", and "What a Girl Wants" and won her the Grammy Award as Best New Artist. Her debut Spanish album, Mi Reflejo (2000, her first album with bubblegum pop) came out. It topped the Billboard Top Latin Albums charts for 19 weeks in a row. Aguilera was the sole artistic director of her fourth studio album Stripped (2002). The music video for "Dirty" included Aguilera's expression of her sexuality in the music video. This led to controversy and the demotion of her image as a teenage idol. But, the following singles "Beautiful", "Fighter" and "Can't Hold Us Down" were top-ten hits across several countries and she was voted the most successful female artist of 2003.
