Evander Holyfield

Evander Holyfield, born October 19, 1962, is an American professional boxer who fought from 1984 to the year 2011. He reigned as the undisputed cruiserweight champion in the latter half of the 1980s, and heavyweight in the early 1990s, and is the only boxer in history who has won the undisputed title in two weight classes during the time of the three belts. Holyfield is also known as "the Real Deal", is the sole world heavyweight champion. He held the WBA, WBC and IBF titles from 1990-1992, and the WBA as well as the IBF titles in 1993-1994 as well as the WBA title in 1997 until 1999. Holyfield was an amateur and won a bronze medal in 1984's Summer Olympics for the USA in light heavyweight. He became a professional at the age of 21 before moving to cruiserweight in 1985 before winning his first world championship in the year following, beating Dwight Muhammad Qawi for the WBA title. Holyfield was able to beat Ricky Parkey, Carlos de Leon and became the undisputed cruiserweight champion. He moved up to heavyweight in 1988, later defeating Buster Douglas in 1990 to take the unified WBA, WBC and IBF heavyweight titles, as well as the undisputed heavyweight championship. He successfully defended his titles three times, scoring victories over the former champions George Foreman and Larry Holmes before losing his first professional bout to Riddick Bowe in 1992. Holyfield took back the title in a rematch with Bowe one year later. Bowe had previously lost the WBC title. Holyfield then lost the titles in an upset against Michael Moorer in 1994.Holyfield was forced to retire following medical advice, but he returned the following year with a clear medical report. In 1996 he defeated Mike Tyson and reclaimed the WBA title, in what was described by The Ring magazine as the Fight of the Year and the Upset of the Year. This resulted in Holyfield the first boxer after Muhammad Ali to win a world heavyweight title three times. Holyfield beat Tyson in a rematch of 1997. Tyson was disqualified after he slit off a portion of Holyfield's ear. He also won a rematch against Michael Moorer, which saw him regain the IBF title. In 1999, Holyfield took on Lennox Lewis in an unification fight for the WBA, WBC, and IBF titles. It ended up in an unpopular draw. Holyfield lost in a rematch eight months after. He defeated John Ruiz in a rematch eight months later to claim the vacant WBA title. It made him the first boxer to earn the title of heavyweight heavyweight four times. Holyfield was defeated in a rematch against Ruiz seven month later, and was faced three times in the draw. Holyfield is currently ranked number77 in The Ring's 100 most outstanding boxers list[3] and was named the 22nd most feared fighter over the last eighty years in 2002. [4] He is currently placed No.91 in BoxRec's ranking the best pound-for pound boxers of all time. 5 BoxingScene ranked him the greatest cruiserweight of all time. 6 He was also the first boxer in history to have world titles in three different decades, in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2000s.
