Allen was born in Denver on the 13th of June 1953. He is the third-oldest of six children born to Martha Katherine (nee Fox) who was a community-service worker and Gerald M. Dick (real estate agent). Then, he attended Central Michigan University before transferring to Western Michigan University in 1974. He graduated in 1974. Allen was a student at Western Michigan University. He also worked for the WIDR radio station. He graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Science in Communications in 1976 and was a specialist in production for television and an additional minor split.
