Rafferty was the youngest of four children in Riverside, Greenwich, Connecticut. Her love for the arts is due to her mother Mary Lee Rafferty (chairwoman of the English Department at Convent of the Sacred Heart school) as well as her father Michael Griffin Rafferty Jr. who has had two successful careers in oil painting as well as finance. Constance, Ann, and Maura are her three sisters. Rafferty studied at Phillips Academy in Andover, Massachusetts and graduated in 1989. After completing her studies in English and Theater at Hamilton College she studied at Oxford University in her senior year. She then continued her studies at the Yale School of Drama and obtained a Master of Fine Art.
