Murdock was the son of J.E. Murdock, a Louisiana native. Murdock and Willie Murdock. He has four sisters. In 1964, Murdock graduated from LaGrange High School in Lake Charles. Murdock was a student at Southwestern Assemblies of God University, Waxahachie (Texas), but was able to leave after only three semesters. The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Murdock had registered 76 songs with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. This was in accordance with unofficial data which was posted on the web sites of those organizations. In 2003 the Fort Worth Star-Telegram ran a series about Murdock offering association (donor-raised) money to selected family members who were members of the association's board.On March 3 2003 The Associated Press reported Murdock asked members for donations to aid those in need, but used more than 60% of the donations on overhead, including his salary, with only an insignificant amount (reported as "legal minimums of 1%-3%") on helping the needy or any other public interest' . In 2004, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported Murdock "has started a church and the law allows him to keep financial records behind closed doors." In August 2004, the group purchased the International Faith Center in Haltom City, Texas, and changed its name to The Wisdom Center, which it operates as a church.On March 22 2012, the Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that Murdock's home, valued at $1.5 million, was available for auction. The 25-room, 9943-square-foot house located on 6.89 acres was listed on Realtor.com for $3.2 million. It was then relisted for $2.7 million on September 4, 2013.
