Clayton was born in Johnston (Rhode Island). She studied at the University of Rhode Island and later relocated to New York City to attend New York Conservatory for Dramatic Arts in 2005. She made her film debut in 2006 when she played an in-character role in the independent film December Ends. Clayton was played by Sarah Carter in the Disney adventure movie John Carter in 2012. In the following year, she was in guest roles as Rizzoli and Isles. In 2014, she was cast as the lead role, along with Edwina Findley, Heather Hemmens, Zulay Henao, and April Parker Jones in the Oprah Winfrey Network prime time soap opera If Love for You isn't the right thing to do. After five seasons, the series was pulled in 2020. In 2014 Clayton was cast as Miles Teller in the biographical drama Bleed For This, which is about Vinny Pazienza and Katey Sgal. Alongside Bleed For This, Clayton is the female lead in two additional feature-length movies scheduled to be released in 2016, the comedy, The Bet and the drama, Bad Frank. She was the lead role in Lifetime Movie Cradle Swapping in 2017, and also in Little Angel in 2017. Little Angel in 2017. Clayton was also cast in 2018's Showtime drama, City on a Hill.
